Before you start using Squarecap with your students, you will want to choose the settings for how Squarecap will take Attendance.
Log-in to your Squarecap account and click your name on the top right of the dashboard. Select "Session Settings." You can disable any of these features by toggling the blue buttons on the right.
You can track attendance for your sessions by enabling the Attendance Verification feature.
This feature determines which students are connected to your session using the classroom’s dominant Wi-Fi network.
Our algorithm detects outliers amongst the students' connections. Students using an outlier connection are suspected of not being present in the classroom. As a result, students who are using their wireless carrier are typically flagged as suspected. If using this feature, you will need to instruct your students to use the classroom Wi-Fi so that they will be counted as present.
Attendance verification determines which students are possibly logging in from outside of class. After a session is finished, those suspected students are notified that they need to visit the professor in order to verify their attendance.
You have several different options on how you can choose to take attendance in your classes. Choose the method that works best for you.
Option 1 - No attendance tracking
Turn off attendance tracking by clicking the blue tab. No attendance data will be stored
Option 2 - Turn on attendance tracking
Click the blue tab so that attendance tracking is on. You will be able to view or download student attendance data at any time.
Additional attendance options:
A. Join Code
If checked, Squarecap will generate a unique join code for each session that will be displayed on the instructor's screen once the session starts. Teachers can either share their share on a projector or write the number in another location in the room so that students can enter this code to participate.
Take attendance anytime!
A new code can be generated at any point during a session as many times as a teacher decides necessary.
- To take attendance again with a new code
- Click Finish next to the current code
- Click Take Attendance
Every time a new code is generated, students will be required to enter that code, and the system will record any event in which a student logs in from an outlier connection.
*Note - Some teachers like to generate a code both at the beginning and end of class so that students are encouraged to come on time and stay to the end
B. Mark unverified suspected students as absent
If checked, Students who log in with an outlier connection such as their home or dorm will be marked as "suspected as absent" and will not be given credit for any questions that they answered. Students who accidentally logged on using a cell phone network will be prompted to see their teacher after class for manual verification at the teacher's discretion.
The system assigns an "Attendance Score" to each student based on the number of times they successfully enter a join code. To see this number after the session has been finished, click on the title of the session and choose "Show Student Data" on the right. You will then be able to click "Students" to view their grades and attendance score.
- Click on a student name for more detail on their specific attendance data.
Now that you have updated your Attendance Settings, make sure that you have also set your Course Settings and Grade Upload Settings (Canvas teachers only).
