There are two ways to track attendance of students using Squarecap.
- Use an Attendance verification question
- Choose Grade Upload Settings from Main Menu
- Choose Grade By Attendance
If the student answers the question (doesn't matter if they get it correct) he or she gets credit for it
- Create an Attendance question in your lecture
Create a Lecture with just one question that serves as the “attendance question” (i.e. an easy question that everyone will know the answer to). Start this lecture and let the students know that they must submit an answer to the question to get attendance credit. Once the lecture is finished, Squarecap has a record of exactly which students’ submitted answers.
This record is available in two places.
(a) It is automatically available in Squarecap after the lecture is finished in the “Lecture Details” page that has the number of students who did not attend and a display of their names when clicked on.
(b) The record can also be made available in the LMS (Only Canvas supported) or downloaded by you as a .csv file. Click on the Blue Gear on the right of the corresponding lecture to download into .csv or upload to the LMS
2. The second way to track attendance is through the built in Attendance Verification feature
This feature determines which students are connected to your lecture using the classroom’s dominant Wi-Fi network and which students are not. It works by identifying the most commonly used network connection (or set of IP addresses) by all the students connected to the lecture and treats every other network connection used as an outlier. Students who are using an outlier network connection to connect to your lecture are flagged as suspected of not being in the classroom. Typically students who are using their 4G connection may also be flagged as suspected students. Once the lecture is finished, all suspected students will get a message on their screen see the instructor and verify their attendance. Similarly the instructor also sees a message on their screen with a list of suspected student names.
- Login and choose Lecture Settings
- Enable Attendance Verification
You have also the option to mark those flagged students who did not verify their attendance physically after class as absent from the class. These students would be counted as absent for grade purposes.
- Create and conduct a lecture as you normally would
As soon as you "Finish" the lecture you will see a list of suspected students. Verify the attendance of suspected students if any by checking them off on the suspected student’s list.
The attendance records are available in the same way as indicated.
